Police say he operated in a restricted zone
By Timothy Cox| Staff Writer |
Wednesday, April 04, 2007 A Texas-based ticket broker remained in jail
Tuesday night after being charged with a ticket scalping violation at
the Augusta National Golf Club.
Louis Eugene Chaump, 42, of Austin, was charged with the misdemeanor
offense Tuesday afternoon while standing outside a gate of the
National, Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Gay said.
About an hour before the arrest, police warned Mr. Chaump that he
would have to move if he was going to engage in buying and selling
practice round tickets, Lt. Gay said.
Mr. Chaump, who works for Ticket City, an Austin-based ticket
brokerage firm, was booked into the Richmond County Law Enforcement
Center at about 3:30 p.m., a jail report stated.
Police said Mr. Chaump was attempting to buy Tuesday's practice round
badges from patrons leaving the golf club. Ultimately, he would resell
the already-used badges at a "substantial mark-up," Lt. Gay said.
Practice round tickets Tuesday were $31, when priced at face-value.
Lt. Gay said scalping is prohibited in a restricted zone within 2,700
feet of the golf club's three walk-in gates, 3, 6 and 10.
Selling or buying badges in the prohibited zone falls under disorderly
conduct charges and fines can range from $30 to $1,000, plus court
fees.
